Your Will Be Done

Any fan of the movie 'The Princess Bride' remembers the phrase 'as you wish'. The Dread Pirate Roberts rolls head over heels as he shouts the phrase to Princess Buttercup. The phrase reveals his true identity as her beloved Wesley.
'Your will be done' is a phrase that reveals the identity of Jesus as vividly portrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. The intensity of the prayers by Jesus draws blood and exhausts the nearby disciples. Yet Jesus lives his life according to what he sees his Father do and say. He exemplified Deuteronomy 8:3b(NLT) "He(God) did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord."
Crucifixions take place during Jesus' lifetime. He sees the crosses. Physical agony awaits him. The spiritual agony of bearing our sin means separation from the Father. Christ's death redeems us. He pays the price for our sin. He said, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but Yours be done."(Luke 22:42 NIV) He knows the chalice he drinks. He makes the request since he knows what his physical body and his spirit will go through, yet he yields to the Father's will.
Relationship with you and me is the joy set before Jesus(See Hebrews 12). That's how much He wants to be with us. He solves the sin problem by replacing it with His own righteousness. Now, when we embrace Christ's sacrifice for our sins, we can step into a relationship with the Father. He now dwells within us through the Holy Spirit.
That picture of willing sacrifice by Jesus inspires and encourages me to picture the joy that comes when I say to my Father 'your will be done'. It's an invitation to deeper fellowship with God. Ever since God gave me a picture of me dancing on His shoes as a fearful twenty-two year old, it's transformed how I think about doing His will. He gives me the grace to partner with Him and follow His lead. He moves me where he wants me as I stay connected to Him.
The question I ask myself is whether anyone can recognize me as a person who says 'Your will be done'. Jesus lived by every word that proceeded from the mouth of the Father. When Jesus comes back, will He say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant'?
